Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, farmer, fisherman, hunter, hero, and friend, passed away August 17, 2010 at 10:40 p.m. at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan surrounded by his family and friends. Wesley (“Web”) was born to Theodore and Minnie (Vallender) Hayward on August 13, 1920, his “always lucky Friday the Thirteenth.”  He grew up on a Portsmouth Township farm, where being pulled by the tail of a dairy cow in the pasture was a young man’s version of water skiing.  He served in the US Army Air Corps as an Anti-aircraft Spotter in the North African campaign visiting the cities of Tunis, Oran, and Palermo to name a few.  He married Betty Schnettler on January 31, 1948, and they began a family on a farm in Merritt Township across from John’s Bar, which provided a meeting place for the family, friends, acquaintances, and everyone who wanted to stop and talk.  The farm, over the years, produced peas, melons, potatoes, wheat, rye, and corn; navy, pinto, and soy beans; mud fights, some demolition derby cars, and ice boats; a teacher, a dentist, a lawyer, three military officers, fighter and airline pilots, and five children.  Web always had time for family, friends, farmers, children, dogs, deer hunting, opening day of duck season, a garden, John Deere’s, and happy hour.   He never turned down a crop tour or a flight around the bay to check the fishing, and always gave a smile when you needed it.  Wesley was a member of the Munger Golf League, the Bay City Elks, Trinity St. James Lutheran Church (past treasurer), D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans) and Merritt Township Zoning Board. He is survived by his wife, Betty, four children: Sue (James) May; Alan (Carol) Hayward; Randall (Barbara) Hayward; and Dr. Janis Hayward (Dr. David Smith); grandchildren Melissa (Logan) May White; Marc May; Wesley A., Travis and Garit Hayward; Whitney and Colton Hayward; Spencer and Erica Skillman, and a great grandson Cassius White.
